Intel to Cease Operations at Five Facilities in Malaysia, Philippines, US
January 22, 2009
Intel announced on January 21 that it will cease operations in five facilities in Malaysia, the Philippines, and the United States, affecting approximately 5,000 to 6,000 employees, according to reports by the Associated Press and Reuters. The personnel reduction is slated for completion by year-end, with some being let go and others relocated in other facilities. Facilities to cease operations include two assembly test plants in Penang, Malaysia, and one in Cavite, Philippines. A wafer fabrication facility in Hillsboro, Oregon, and another one in Santa Clara, California, will halt production. All five are older facilities, and Intel said that the newer-generation plants manufacturing 32- and 45-nm chips will not be affected by the streamlining efforts.
